When it comes to matters of the heart in the month of February, we’re shifting the focus from candies and flowers to congenital heart defects.

February is Heart Month, a time to bring attention to the importance of cardiovascular health, and what we can to reduce our risk of cardiovascular disease.

Children’s hospitals across Canada, and leading heart health authorities, are stressing the importance of heart health awareness this month.

Why is this relevant to children’s health? According to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, one in every 100 babies are born with a heart defect.

This year’s BCCHF Children’s Miracle Network Champion Blayke is one of those 100 babies. She was diagnosed with a heart defect known as coarctation of the aorta, a narrowing of the body’s largest artery. Blayke underwent heart surgery, which was a success. And days later, her family was able to see her loving personality shine.

For the sake of children suffering from congenital heart defects, consider the impact you can make on the future of heart health research. Because children are at the heart of what we do.
