Helping Kids Shine
BC Children’s is the only hospital in the province devoted exclusively to the care of children. That means one million kids, including some of the sickest and most seriously injured, rely on the hospital for specialized care they often cannot receive anywhere else.
Since 1982, our Foundation has been working to inspire people and communities to join our quest and raise the bar of children’s health care, from enabling new programs that deliver compassionate care tailored to the needs of children, to purchasing the latest innovations in equipment. Our vision is that every child is healthy and able to fulfil their hopes and dreams, achieved by fueling research aimed at conquering and ultimately preventing childhood diseases.
Conquering childhood illnesses
Amazing progress has been made in improving outcomes for many childhood illnesses. But when it comes to taking on the enormous health challenges our children face, there is so much more to do.
Debilitating diseases are on the rise. Many illnesses continue to be suffered in excruciating silence. And too many kids wait for treatments that do not yet exist.
What if you helped?
Through the power of philanthropy, we know we can change this. Your generosity will support the three critical areas that are needed to advance the quest to conquer childhood illnesses:
- Research. By pushing forward research, you will help experts understand why illnesses are hurting kids so that something can be done about it.
- Technology. By funding the latest technologies, you will enable experts to innovate in what they use to deliver more effective care.
- Kid-focused care. Your support will ensure kids are cared for by specialists and with programs that understand how they are different.

BC Children’s serves the largest geographic region of any children’s hospital in North America – almost a million square miles.
Leading oncology research
Over the past several decades, survival rates for childhood cancers have risen dramatically. Today, 80% of children who are diagnosed with cancer will live long, full lives. While remarkable, it’s still not enough because it means that one in five kids won’t survive. To improve outcomes for these children, the oncology team at BC Children’s is leading clinical research that will help them anticipate relapses before they occur. They are also focused on novel ways to treat the toughest cancers, from harnessing the body’s immune system to fight the disease, to delivering personalized therapies that are tailored to each child’s unique genetic makeup.
Revolutionizing diabetes management
Kids with diabetes endure endless finger pricks and insulin injections, but the disease is so much more than that. Diabetes can bring a lifetime of challenges, from having to monitor blood sugar levels around the clock to a never-ending fear of life-threatening complications like heart disease or kidney damage.
Our researchers are working tirelessly to unravel the mysteries of this complex disease move closer toward a cure. It will also ensure that kids and families who struggle with the disease today have access to the right resources, delivered directly to them, which can shape the trajectory of their lives.
Improving mental health training and resources
Knowing that the best way to improve mental health care is through early intervention and treatment, experts are creating initiatives that will help kids receive the care they need sooner. One way we’re doing this is by partnering with community care providers across the province to provide training and tools that will help them identify when a child needs help. They’re also investing in new resources and tools that can support families when they need it most, like the first mental health app of its kind.
As the first ever of its kind, Breeze is a connected pair of safety apps for children and their families that offers tools like relaxation techniques, a secure messaging portal, the ability to track stress levels, emergency contacts, and more to help to help children or youth at risk of suicide through the most stressful times of their struggle.
